Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.

Award Summary:

The aim of this course is to provide participants with the skills, knowledge and experience to competently train, assess and facilitate Surf Life Saving awards.

These units are also pre-requisites for members wanting to become endorsed facilitators for the Branch Facilitated awards of Spinal Management, Silver Medallion Advanced Emergency Care, Silver Medallion Basic Beach Management, Trainers Certificate and Assessors Certificate.

Unit/s of Competency:

The TAA40104 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment specifies the competencies required to deliver training in an industry area or area of subject matter expertise and to conduct competency based assessment in a range of contexts. It consists of 12 core units including:

  • TAAENV401B    Work effectively in vocational education and training
  • TAAENV402B    Foster and promote an inclusive learning culture
  • TAAENV403B    Ensure a healthy and safe learning environment
  • TAADES401B    Use training packages to meet client needs
  • TAADES402B    Design and develop learning programs
  • TAADEL401C    Provide training through instruction and demonstration of work skills
  • TAADEL403B    Facilitate individual learning
  • TAADEL404B    Facilitate work based learning
  • TAAASS401C    Plan and organise assessment
  • TAAASS402C    Assess competence
  • TAAASS403B    Develop assessment tools
  • TAAASS404B    Participate in assessment validation

In addition to these core units participants also complete 2 elective units. Many providers have already selected these two units on your behalf.

Award:

On completion of this course candidates will be issued with a statement of attainment for the above units and a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.

To become a SLSNSW endorsed facilitator candidates must then be mentored to facilitate a minimum of two (2) courses in their chosen field. Once this has been signed off by the mentor and SLSNSW, candidates will be endorsed to facilitate courses for SNB Branch in that discipline.   • Plan assessment

  • Conduct a quality assessment
  • Validate assessment
  • Use assessment tools
  • Provide feedback to candidates

Pre-requisites:

  • Candidates must be a minimum of 18 years of age on the date of the final assessment

Note: Before you can become a facilitator for any award (eg Bronze Medallion, IRB crew etc), you must have current knowledge of the award you wish to assess and be endorsed as a facilitator in that award by SLSNSW.

Course Duration:

The duration of the course is dependent on the rate the candidate is able to proceed through the written assessment tasks. Cert IV courses can be run as either face to face sessions or online dependent on the preference of the candidate.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

If you believe you already possess some or all of the skills and knowledge of this course, you may wish to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). Consult the SLSNSW RPL Guide for Applicants available on the Participant Resources page of the SLSNSW website.

Assessment:

Assessment is through demonstration, presentation and application of all elements of competency in the workplace. Participants will be required to complete activities that may include role-plays, oral and written questioning, practical demonstrations and performing scenarios.

Proficiency:

There are no proficiency requirements for the Cert IV.

Facilitators must re-endorse with SLSNSW every year to remain current. As part of this process they need to provide evidence of currency by supplying their Vocational Education and Training (VET) log book details.
