Each year 1 in 5 Australians will experience a mental illness. Many people are not knowledgeable or confident to offer assistance. Physical first aid is accepted and widespread in our community, however most do not cover mental health problems. Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) teaches people the skills to help someone who they're concerned about. Completing an MHFA Course will help you to develop the skills to support a friend, family member or co-worker. Having mental health first aid skills means that you can assist someone developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis and make a real difference to your community.
This is an accredited course under the auspices of Mental Health First Aid Australia and all participants will receive a certificate on successful completion.
The course is facilitated by Lindsay Smith who is one of the most experienced and knowledgeable Mental Health first aid trainers in Australia.
Normally these course cost between $290- $350 however the Branch is offering a subsidised rate of $120 for SLS Members and $200 for Non Members
Candidates must be Over 18 to attend this course

Every Surf Club should have a Member Protection Information Officer (MPIO) available to their membership.

What is an MPIO?

A MPIO provides information about the rights, responsibilities and options available to a member making a complaint or needing assistance dealing with a conflict. They can also inform and advise sport administrators and complaint handlers in Member Protection Policies within our organisation. MPIO’s are impartial and don’t mediate or investigate complaints.

How do I become an MPIO?

You need to complete a face-to-face 3 hours course, complete an online session (your own pace) and you can register as an MPIO

Courses are facilitated through NSW Government, Department Sport and Recreation.

Further information can be found on the Play By The Rules website.

Dee Why SLSC are hosting a course and it is open to all Clubs wanting to nominate a member to become their MPIO. Number of attendees is capped at 25 for this course and bookings need to be complete by the member wanting to attend on a first in basis so please be quick to secure you place as this course is also open to members of the public.
