Rescue Water Craft (RWC) Operators
Rescue Water Craft have the ability to provide increased surveillance of our coastline and rapid response to emergencies in high risk or unpatrolled areas. Their speed and manoeuvrability in the surf makes them a vital part of our support services group. Our RWC Operators are highly trained, experienced lifesavers.
SNB Branch runs three RWC support service groups.
- Barrenjoey 1 based at North Palm Beach covers the area from Nth Palm Beach to Newport
- Support Ski 2 based at Mona Vale Beach covers the area from Bilgola to Long Reef Headland
- Support Ski 3 based at Freshwater Beach covers the area from Long Reef Headland to Shelley Beach (Manly)
The RWC Operator is responsible for the operation of the rescue watercraft including:
- Pre and post operational checks
- Operating the RWC to support patrol duties and rescue operations as required. This is as directed by the authorised supervisor and Branch standard operating procedures.
- Complying with the Powercraft Code of Conduct.
Pre-requisites to be considered for training:
- Candidates must be a minimum of 18 years of age on the date of assessment
- Candidates must hold and be proficient in the following SLSA awards:
- Advanced Resuscitation Techniques Certificate
- Senior First Aid Certificate (Apply first aid)
- Bronze Medallion / Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue)
- Silver Medallion Basic Beach Management
- IRB crew award
- Silver Medallion IRB Driver award
- Candidates must hold a motor vehicle license with tow capability.
Members with the applicable pre-requisites can apply for this course through the SNB Branch Office and are selected for training on their awards, patrolling experience and suitability for the role. It is a requirement that they must join the Support Services RWC group and commit to completing a minimum of four shifts per season or their award will lapse.
Suitable members are trained by Branch appointed RWC trainers and facilitators. Training is usually over the off season due to availability of equipment.
