2011/2012 Representative Selection Policy
What is the purpose of this policy?
The purpose of this policy is to provide advice on selection matters for individual and team events where entries are limited for the benefit of SNB Branch Team Selections for competitors and relevant officials.
What is the objective of this policy?
The objective is to ensure that the best possible combination of Athletes are selected to represent the Branch in all Representative competition.
What events does this policy apply to?
This policy applies to all team events and to individual events where entry/selection is limited or restricted.
Who is on the Selection Committee?
The Selection Committee in relation to this policy comprise the following:
· Chairman of Selectors Elected Annually
· Nominated selectors x 4 Elected Annually
The Director of Board of Surf Sports and his/her Deputy will be the convenors for all meetings of the Selection Committee. In the event of a tied vote, the Director will also cast the deciding vote.
Selectors will and must declare their conflicts of interest before the selection process.
What is the selection criteria?
The selection criteria may include the following:
· Satisfaction of all members patrolling obligations (compulsory)
· Current financial member of a SNB SLSC (compulsory)
· Current performance, in the discipline for which selection is being considered.
· Past performance at Branch, Interbranch, State, National, International or other competition in the discipline for which selection is being considered
· Demonstrated and/or potential ability to work with other team members and team officials
· Current level of skill and physical fitness for the event for which selection is being considered
· Current or potential injury or conditions which may impair, inhibit or prevent performance at the required level
· Training commitment and attitude towards training.
· Any other factor(s) considered relevant in the circumstances.
In considering the above the Selectors may give weight to extenuating circumstances such as illness, injury or personal bereavement.
What is the selection procedure?
The Selectors have total discretion in selecting the various representative teams, or individuals where entry and or selection is restricted, and may have regard to any one or more of the selection criteria referred to above.
A majority decision of the Selectors is required and their decision shall be final. If a decision is split the Board of Surf Sports Director or his deputy will cast the deciding vote.
Reasons will not be provided for any selection or other decision of the Selectors. The Chair of the Selectors may, however, meet with a non-selected competitor to explain the decision where this is requested by a non-selected competitor. Reasons for selection/non selection will not be provided to third parties other than competitors.
The Selectors may, in their discretion, replace one or more team members in an event after a heat or round and prior to the final of that event.
In the event of illness, injury or extenuating circumstances, after consultation with the Selection Committee, the Coach and his Assistant Coaches may select a replacement in a specific event.
Subject to constraints, individuals chosen by the selectors will be notified as soon as reasonably practical.
Is there any right of appeal by an aggrieved competitor?
There is no right of appeal against a selection decision. The non-selected competitor can arrange for the Chair of the Selection Committee to discuss the decision with him/her.
